If you’re like most people, you probably hate the word budget. It implies, among other things, that you have to save money! If you feel your lifestyle is fine the way it is, it can be pretty tough to even consider dipping into your precious weekly necessities. But before you rule out all budgeting possibilities, take a moment and see if you could handle the following solutions for saving a few bucks here and there.
Services are things we use and/or pay people for things we could do ourselves (most of the time anyway). Things like haircuts, oil changes, gym memberships, and tanning salons are all places where you can save a little cash. For haircuts, do it yourself or find a friend that is handy with some scissors. If you absolutely must have a professional cut your hair, limit your haircuts to once a month, or find a cheaper place if you’re paying the equivalent of a power bill every time. For oil changes, buy a few ramps or a jack stand and do it yourself at home. Drop the gym and tanning salon memberships and get outside. Save on these costs by jogging outside and lying out in the sun at your local pool.
While important, food purchases make up quite a large portion of weekly expenses, especially if you’re buying a lot of brand-name items. The brand-name items are usually located on the middle shelves, usually at eye level or within easy reach. Instead of throwing those in the shopping cart (or buggy if you’re from the South), opt for the items on the lower shelves. Though it might be an off-brand name, it’ll still look and taste the same.
Paying for cable TV can be expensive, but throw in premium channels and your monthly bill is now in the high double if not triple digits. Do yourself a favor and cut out expensive cable channels. Instead, switch to basic cable and bundle your Internet with it. Then, sign up for a cheaper service like Netflix. By doing this you’ll save a bundle on your cable bill and still have more TV shows and movies than you can hope to watch in a lifetime.
Stop by your local insurance agent’s office and prepare to do some questioning. Ask if there are any ways you can lower your insurance bill, such as with a good driver, good student and multi-car discounts. You can also get your vehicle insurance lowered if you are driving less, so don’t hesitate to make it known and get your well-deserved deduction.
